Volunteer Illustrator Showcase

Jane Jensen

I have been an illustrator with Ethnos for almost a year. I have worked on about ten different projects and enjoyed them all. I especially love the dialogue between the author, writer, editor and translator and working as a team to create an interesting book. I work steadily, investing about an hour a day on the project.

I first started illustrating when I learned I could use my art for God. I love the challenge to draw different images. I illustrate on my iPad so that I can easily put the picture on a google doc. I am always open for input, if there is something that needs to be changed. I have only done black and white drawings so far, and might be open to colored pictures. If there is a specific time line for a project, I would like to know ahead of time. I usually work on the illustrations in my free time during the week.

Ruth Bosveld

I live in Tasmania, Australia.  My husband and I have been home-schooling our ten children for over twenty years and we are part of the Southern Presbyterian Church in Hobart.  I trained and worked briefly as a doctor, so I have an interest in scientific and medical illustration work.  While I love drawing people, I choose not to draw images that depict the Lord Jesus in any way.  You can see some of my sketches and more finished paintings on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ruthbosveldart) and Instagram (@ruthbosveldart).  I am so thankful to be able to serve the Lord with my artwork by helping out with the books produced for New Tribes Mission.

Fiona Brown

Hi all, I am Fiona Brown, I am married to Graham – a school teacher and we have two adult children.
Drawing has been a hobby ever since I was a child and I focused on intricate graphite or charcoal works.
Recently though I found out about the Literacy Project and decided that I would try to turn my hand to illustration.
Illustration is certainly a very different art form than my usual works, so I am still learning. I am also trying my hand at digital illustration which is both frustrating and fun at the same time.
My health is challenging after becoming very ill on the mission field 10 years ago, so I do have my limits, but I do enjoy the opportunity to serve in mission in a different manner.

Please find attached a range of samples showing my quicker illustration style, plus an extra. The ‘Page1_Sample’ file shows the first page of a book I illustrated for some other missionaries in the Philippines. It took me lot longer, as I probably got too detailed and researched the backgrounds / environment etc. quite thoroughly.

I have two little girls (hence lockdown cartoon!) and I probably enjoy the quicker / more casual style, as I find the more detailed projects weigh on me if I can’t complete them in a reasonable timeframe. Line drawings would be reasonably quick, comparitively speaking, as the lighting / colour step is cut out.

I’ve enjoyed working on several different types of books for New Tribes authors, including historical works, books with medical diagrams, and a children’s fiction story. I can offer basic line sketches without color or shading. I enjoy taking my time on my drawings; working quickly is not one of my strengths 🙂. I do try to work consistently, though, and devote a couple hours a week to illustrating. Having a picture is really helpful to me, whether the author provides these or I can find one online.

Cindy Fritz

I have been drawing for about 60 years since I was a toddler. I teach art to all ages over 6 in 5 weekly classes.
With reference photos, I can draw most things.  I am least good at drawing people, but I can do it if I have a photo.

Nathan Brendle

My wife and I just finished training missionary training with Ethnos360 March of 2020. We have two kids, Simeon (2) and Sienna (7 months old) we are planning on serving as church planters in Papua New Guinea soon. My parents Dave and Ruth Brendle are also with Ethnos360, my mom was the editor helping to develop the Firm Foundations series for many years. My brother was also in PNG among the Siawi. I’m mostly an artist, and I’ve been doing a lot of tribal drawings during our partnership development, see the example of a Siawi man below.

Sharon Oliver

Born and brought up in India , my husband and I now live in Auckland, New Zealand with our 2 children Isaiah (11) and Salome (8).  I have enjoyed art as a child but have no formal training in art. I am still trying to figure out what exactly my style of art is but as of now I prefer to draw or paint from photos. I did study apparel design when i was younger and so have also come to enjoy drawing textures and fabrics.  I am very excited to be a part of PNG literacy and look forward to serving the Lord in this way.

Havah Jones

Hello! My name is Havah Jones.  I’m from Fort Worth Texas. Using art to tell stories has always been important to me and I would like to use my skills to do that.

Monika Farthing

I recently helped with creating several line drawings from photos for primers for a people group in Africa. I’d be happy to transform any of your photos into similar black/white drawings if you are able to provide the photos. I can make little changes to your photos if needed (e.g. different arm position, different t-shirt design, delete background, get people from different photos into the same picture e.g.)

Charissa Simpson

My name is Charissa Simpson. I live in a tiny town in New Brunswick Canada with my husband Jeremy and little dog Griffin. My husband is a pastor and teacher. I serve along side him in any way that I can.

Drawing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember! My strengths lie in drawing animals, plants, and landscapes; though with the help of a picture I enjoy recreating almost anything. I would appreciate author input and photos when possible, but I am willing to source my own material when there is a need. I find human subjects more of a challenge but am confident that my skills will grow with practice. Speed is not one of my strengths as I am used to finely detailed pieces, however my schedule is quite flexible. I am thankful for this opportunity and I am looking forward to serving the Lord in this way.

Here are some examples of my work.
